Traditional advice often tells families to step back when a loved one struggles with alcohol use. However, we offer an evidence-based approach which helps families stay connected, build supportive relationships, and promotes real recovery – for everyone involved.

how to help someone with a drinking problem

We know how difficult it can be watching a loved one struggle when alcohol has taken over their lives. You want to help but you feel like you are just as powerless over your loved one as they seem to be over alcohol.

One powerful step you can take is to learn proven skills that help encourage your loved one into treatment and support their recovery.

We The Village is a globally developed, evidence-based CRAFT programme now available through The Retreat NZ. This twelve-week, online  programme gives you practical strategies and techniques to help influence a decrease in harmful behaviours and increase positive ones. It also helps improve the chances that your loved one becomes willing to accept help and stay engaged in recovery. For a small investment it will give you information and tools to both help deal with your loved one, and look after yourself.

We The Village has helped over a thousand individuals and families improve their lives. Developed through extensive experience working with families of alcoholics, both personally and professionally – we are excited to bring this programme to New Zealand.

Our CEO, Janet Thompson, explains how proud we are to be partnering with We The Village to offer this programme.

Help to Stop Drinking at the retreat nz

At The Retreat NZ we have helped thousands of people find a solution to their problem with alcohol– from help to stop drinking, to family interventions, relapse prevention and sober living support.

Love First Intervention

Living with the despair of someone else’s alcohol addiction can be heart-breaking – especially if they are unwilling to seek help. We work with families to get their loved ones into  treatment and help pave the way for long-term recovery.

Alcohol Detox

Not everyone can stop drinking safely on their own and wait times for public services can be lengthy. Through medical supervision and peer support, our 7 day private alcohol detox programme safely separates people from alcohol and sets them on the path for continuing sobriety.

30 Day Residential Alcohol Rehab

Through our 30 day residential rehab programme, we provide a safe and supportive environment where people learn the skills necessary for long-term recovery from alcohol dependency.

Sober Living After Rehab

On completing our 30 day residential rehab programme, guests who are looking for additional structure and support can apply for a spot in one of sober living houses in Warkworth.
