Whether you are considering The Retreat NZ for yourself or a loved one, you are bound to have a lot of questions. While we hope you find what you are looking for here, please contact us on 0800 276 237 if you would like to know more.
WHAT IS THE RETREAT NZ ALL ABOUT?
The Retreat NZ offers a 12 Step residential programme of recovery for those who are struggling with alcohol dependency. During your time with us, you are referred to as guests and will be immersed in a programme that will educate and change your life – if you are open and willing to change. Our programme will equip you with a set of tools to help you to maintain a sober lifestyle. Our experienced staff and volunteers are passionate about the 12 Steps and will work with you every step of the way on your path to recovery – both during your stay and after.
HOW DOES THE RETREAT NZ WORK?
The Retreat NZ is a residential alcohol rehabilitation facility – a sacred place that works in harmony with the 12 Step programme of recovery. The Retreat NZ helps separate guests from their drinking environment, surrounding them with the support of like-minded people who are passionate about helping them find sobriety. We reinforce the philosophy that recovery is a “we” programme. We introduce guests to fellow alcoholics who’s drinking problems have been addressed, who share with them precisely how to get sober and stay sober. The Retreat NZ is firmly grounded in the principles of 12 Step recovery. We help guests become aware of their condition, embrace honesty and take direction which leads them to both abstinence and a marked improved quality of life.
HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL BE AT THE RETREAT NZ WHEN I AM HERE?
The Retreat NZ is a small, intimate place where at any given time we can have between 8 and 12 guests in primary care. You will have a choice of room type for the duration of your 30-day stay. Take a look around our beautiful facility.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The cost varies depending on the room type you choose and includes accommodation, all meals and the proven successful 30-day programme. GST is included. Take a look around our facilities to better understand your options.
Prices start from $16,900 (most 30-day residential rehabs charge over $20,000).
If cost is a barrier to you coming, we do have scholarships available from time to time that can help meet the cost. Give us a call to see if our programme might be the right fit for you, and if so, if there are any current scholarships available.

WHAT ARE THE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS?
You must be at least three days sober off alcohol before entering our 30-day residential programme. If you or your loved one believe this presents a barrier to applying to our programme, please talk to our experienced staff about whether or not you may qualify for our Social Detox programme. Guests are required to complete a pre-registration assessment with a staff member, either on the phone or in person, to ensure that our programme is the right fit. We ask that only guests who have a genuine willingness for transformational change apply.
WHAT FAMILY SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE?
We hold a Family Group on the last Sunday of every month and welcome family and friends to attend. We find this informal group a great way for loved ones to gain support and understanding during what is often a difficult time. If required, we can arrange one-on-one meetings for families and loved ones with our CEO or Programme Director to help them find solutions to concerns or problems they may be experiencing in their lives. Because alcoholism affects the entire family, we are committed to helping families through their own recovery process. We also have a library of useful resources for those wanting to understand more about alcoholism, intervention, rehabilitation and more along with a dedicated family and friends page.
WHAT IS STRUCTURED INTERVENTION?
Our CEO is trained in providing a Love First clinical intervention. This is an intense intervention to help a loved one who is in denial and unwilling to agree to get treatment. Love First interventions have a 95% success rate in getting a loved one to agree to seek help. Check out the resources page for family and friends for further info and get in touch directly to discuss how we can support you with a Love First intervention.
WHAT IS AN ALCOHOL DETOX CLINIC?
An alcohol detox clinic is quite different from a residential rehab centre like The Retreat NZ. A detox clinic is a medical facility, staffed by experienced doctors and nurses who are trained in managing withdrawal symptoms from alcohol. Medical detox uses medications (administered by professionals) to help an individual withdraw from alcohol. Within the wider Auckland region there are only 11 medical detox beds provided and run by Te Whatu Ora (previously District Health Boards).
At The Retreat NZ we provide social detox, which is quite different to medical detox. Social detox uses emotional support and professional therapy to manage withdrawal symptoms in a safe and supportive environment.
We encourage people to be wary of private providers who claim to offer medical detox when what the client actually gets is social detox. Your doctor is the best person to ask about your eligibility for social detox.
WHAT MAKES THE RETREAT NZ DIFFERENT?
Our experienced staff and volunteers all have lived experience with alcoholism. They are the heart of our programme, and their work includes sharing their time and experience of their journey in recovery with our guests.
Because our staff and volunteers have been through alcohol addiction themselves and have found a solution, they are passionate about helping others achieve the same results. Their work is to help bring about change through community and the 12 Step programme.
The Retreat NZ is also HealthCERT certified which means we are registered with and audited by the Ministry of Health to ensure the appropriate standard of care for our guests.
WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING AN ALCOHOL REHABILITATION CENTRE?
Choosing where to turn for help can be daunting. We believe it is extremely important when selecting an alcohol rehabilitation centre that you ask questions that will assist in helping you to find the right programme to achieve your recovery goals. Often, picking up the phone and talking to someone who understands exactly what you’re going through can be helpful. When you call The Retreat NZ you’ll be speaking to someone who was once in your shoes and can offer not only information but understanding. The first question you must ask yourself is, ‘Am I committed and willing to make transformational change in my life?’. If the answer is yes, we can help.
WHAT DOES A SUCCESSFUL RESIDENTIAL REHAB EXPERIENCE LOOK LIKE?
This depends on your goals. Would remaining sober for 30 days be a success to you? What about six months? How about a year? Making a connection to the right programme will greatly increase the likelihood that you complete the programme successfully and maintain a clean and sober lifestyle. We understand and have experienced ourselves the long-term benefits of 12 Step recovery. While our programme may be 30-days, our hope for everyone is that 30-days will be the beginning of long-term sobriety.
IS THE RETREAT NZ THE RIGHT ALCOHOL REHABILITATION FACILITY FOR ME?
Our alcohol rehabilitation centre provides an immersive, supportive, 30-day intensive rehabilitation programme modelled on The Retreat USA. Our primary goal is to enable our guests to understand and practice the power of the 12 Step programme of Alcoholics Anonymous. Our alcohol rehabilitation programme is grounded within the most established and proven rehabilitation programme on the planet.
HOW DO WE ASSIST WITH ALCOHOL RELAPSE PREVENTION?
By the time you leave The Retreat NZ, you will be armed with practical daily tools to help you stay sober. We also ensure you are connected with the recovery community so you can continue your recovery work once you return home. If after completion of the 30-day programme you’re not quite ready to go home, our Sober Living programme provides a safe environment as you find your feet. Our Sober Living guests are encouraged to attend our daily in-house programmes and continue to receive the support they need from our team. They are also required to attend regular 12 Step meetings and be working, studying or volunteering.
